When I was a kid, I was always curious of what life could be like in a circus.

What would happen if I myself lived as a gypsy performing world - wide?

Sans the fantasy, i am quite happy where i am at right now thank you very much.

Now let's get on to the show:

Back in high school, I used to buy random VCDs ( mahal pa anng dvd noon) of anything trippy i would find. This was post - watching fear and loathing in las vegas , Labyrinth and what have yous. So one day , I found this video disk of a show named Varekai by Cirque De Soleil (this was around 10 years ago ) . I got home , not knowing what it was .... filled me up a bowl and ripped the bong like a mother - as i pressed play on the magic unbeknown to unravel before me.

"Click , Insert , Play , Rip , Inhale , Bubble , Exhale.... Watch... Jesus Christ... I just watched the greatest show on earth.. Google.... "

Cut a long story short....

This disk was kept well in my collection until one day it disappeared . But even right after that first encounter with the greatest show i have ever seen, i put it on my bucket list that one day, I shall watch the Cirque live.

And then finally!!!

The show must go on! Tents were standing right up against the mad weather.

Inside , was a more calm enchanting atmosphere. I took a quick snap of the stage

before the lights went off.

Varekai is loosely based on Icarus of Greek Mythology infused with a shit load of fern gully like creatures.

In the future , i hope everybody will be able to experience one serious Circus.

One especially of this caliber. At least now , I can rest... check one off my bucket list.

Let me write about cliche lines and the burdens of the growth or growing up. The sub - cultures the movements and all the psycho - active drugs i may or may not have taken for real, carefully edited transcribed into subliminal pieces of personal expression called blog posts.

Yes i talk about vices for i care not about public image for this is identity we are speaking of and the expression of it freely. Isn't this why there are all these "local" brands now? Everybody wants to share who they are. A few of you have been following us and it is time to give thanks. Buy the ticket and take the ride.

About a year ago I started this blog with the intention of writing about my interests ; Art , Fashion , Graffiti , The Sex , the drugs and the rockers and rollers. Psh. I apologize to my beloved blog which started it all for i have been too distracted by all the other things i have had to do and for a minute there forgot that this site was to concretize my thoughts and not for anyone else... and if anyone wants to do a read through; well welcome.

Yes there has been a hundred changes thru the years. And it is time to responsibly share them.

A book has two faces, the front and back, several pages with different content in between. But it all starts with the blacks and the whites. The essence of a book is saturated by the way it should look, the book becomes slowly saturated by hard bounds , gold linings and overtly glossy pages. Read it's black and white some might bore and some might inspire. Experience is relative. You either like it or you don't. All you got to do is look. A matter of A.D.D.? Maybe. But it's putting your hand on the bible, and crossing your fingers. It's what you do with what you see.

Point is you make mistakes , shoo the bats away, they will come and swarm you ten fold and in your darkest , sweatiest hour bombard. Learn how to swat these infernal creatures away, you move the fuck on after bitching. No one in this "positive" "forward - thinking" "young" generation is getting older. It's time to act our age; and it's the age of now.

The Ramones were strong willed , and vision driven, even if they didn't have a template for doing what they wanted to do; they just did and learned everything as they went along. And there's nothing more Punk Rock than just going for it.

Johnny Ramone never smiled. Joey Ramone was a freak and a weirdo. Tommy Ramone was the proffesional. Dee Dee Ramone was the junkie. And the other ones were Drunks and the other Other one wasn't a real Ramone. The Ramones were kind of like your family.
And at the same time, they're just like your friends.

Long time peer and ally , Whoop has been part of PSP since the days when street art in the Philippines was but a mere fetus feeding itself to form a living , breathing , organic sub - culture.

The first time i got to paint with Whoopie was in - front of Fresh Manila store , back then it was in Tomas Morato. Back then, his works already had a surreal candy style using colors and characters to his own aethetic. But back then, he wasn't as polished as he is known for today.

I've been blessed to watch the evolution of a lot of the cats here in the Philippines and Whoop had always been an inspiration and exciting to see n his element (or in his own world).

Finally, he is blessed by Fresh Manila to release his first toy release, and also... A solo Exhibit.

Last night Febuary 16 2010. BLACKBOOK in cooperation with our BSIDE family and Manila Massive celebrated our very first collaborative effort. What can we say? It started from a conversation drinking. We wanted to see something different, and we executed all the ideas. We'd like to thank all the cats that came out and supported us. And the music shamans on deck that night; Kiki Machine. Ronian Poe and his Motor heads. Bing of Juan Pablo Dream and last but not the least Mr. Huang.. The ladies? Beautifully crafted choppers were parked in the courtyard. The money shot. Meiday Madness

Ah Meiday... The night at Cubao X created by Mei Bastes.
The only night at Cubao X powered by Mei and her friends. Where a bunch of bands come together and produce a mini festival. It's the only night that possesses the power to finish beer stocks, scatter multi - colored puke spots , broken bottles and fill the horse shoe shaped expo center with a salad of human beings from a galaxy of cultures pouring to the streets.

We were all there. Graff heads , punks , panty monsters , junkies , rockers , hip hop heads , hipsters , dirty hipsters. Sorry for not saving you the stereotypical narration. I couldn't help but do it.

So what was an Meiday last night? Well, as I sat and drank my first drink was this uber stylish 'punk' or at least he dressed the part. Mohawk , checkered buzzed hair , plaid with patches and metal balls chain to match. Wow. He sure could have been the omen for the night.

Oh and the black out for a good hour. And when the lights came on. So did the music come back. And visually a teenage wasteland. And it was classic. Classic Meiday.

The henley, crisp and classic, reliable and flexible. In this photo, you'll see Alex Yamaguchi's rendition of the classic henley. Though not actually rendered, it shows you the impact of BASIC is in clothing.

Alexander Yamaguci was born in Kagurazaka, Tokyo. At age 10, he started customizing vintage denims with his mother's sewing machine. When he visited the U.S. years later to surf, he was captivated by Los Angeles and decided to relocate. Alexander launched Alex B, the forerunner of Alexander Yamaguchi, in 2001. Since 2005, he has been introducing his collections in New York and Paris. Receiving favorable recognitions for silkscreen prints by hand and cut-and-sewns with established unique cutting, his lines are carried at select shops and high-end department stores in the U.S. and Europe. Appreciating vintage clothes, Alexander designs clothes from his unique perspective, focusing on silhouettes and wear comfort. Through travel, Alexander is also inspired by cultures, arts and architecture and is integrating these various elements into his designs.

Recently, Chi of BLACKBOOK worked with Greater Good for their launch.

Created and managed by Chris and Michael Concepcion; It a the testament on how the youth now, is not only reaching far with their capabilities but applying them and creating something that actually has a greater impact rather than just for vanity.

Greater Good, collaborates with different artists to create shirt designs based on socially aware themes and donate them to different charities.

TRON and HERMIT CRAB COLONIES

The crew had gone around to see the new TRON movie all together. The only way we would suggest you watch it is in DIGITAL 3d in IMAX. Totaly immersed in it, we left the cinema smiling and inspired. If I was a bit younger this movie would most probably have changed my life. Although, I think it still did quite a bit. See Daft Punk's video for the movie as they scored it after the jump.

Never have I seen a movie make my jaw drop quite as much as TRON : LEGACY. It was an awesome - well directed movie. Minimal cheesy scenes and thick with plot schemes. Tron might well be, in these modern times what STAR WARS did for my childhood. It is that good.

Here's an example of somebody who lived his life like a Samurai. Tokyo based photographer, Yasumasa Yonehara has been a free lance photographer his whole proffesional life. Living life with - out fear and breaking conservative norms in his home of Japan. He has managed to become part of Japan's commercial and popular culture. As one of Japan's most sexually expressive photographers; he showcases Japan's female cliques and subcultures. Using Japanese young, hip and beautiful women as muses for his photographs; he engages the viewer by using the subject and plays with the 'male gaze'.

He has worked with big brands such as ; G - Shock, Clot , KIKSTYO , Levix x Fenom just to name a few. His book Tokyo Amour is a testament to what he is known for in Japan.

And early this year, he did a book with Theresa Fu who is a Hong Kong Cantopop singer, film and television actress, and model.

He is proof that you don't have to go up the common 'elite - path' of being corporate slave and you can be who you want to be if you just stick to it.

His books are available in store now.

ARKIV EXHIBIT IN VoV

Indonesian artist Arkiv has been painting, illustrating and designing cartoon like figures since 2005. Shortly after finishing his Bachelor degree in Architecture he plunged into the art world citing his love for drawing figures as his inspiration for this change of career path.

I recently met the technically astound and visually appealing artist in his solo show going on this December at Vinyl on Vinyl called; Out Of Nothing. It's happening at The Collective.

If Kaws was for me the premiere pop artist right now.. Arkiv would be the abstracted version of his works.

There's a new Converse store in Eastwood Mall.

And about two years ago , started the craze on the boat shoe. And we've seen it grow so huge that sneakers companies have translated the deckard style into their vulcanized rubber soles. Vans had done it and I've seen so many consumers bite it. To each his own I say.

Though not my cup of coffee, I just thought it was interesting to see Converse's translation and take it a notch 'classier' by mixing it with the iconic Jack Parcell smile. That is all.

Deep in concentration to further understand the metaphors in life or more importantly, what the problems in front of us are, and hopefully one day breakthrough and put them behind us. Yes they are legendary. Most people know that. A tale once travelled of a group that sang about legs, bodies and beautiful ladies in general. An off - shot of the village people. In true Filipino fashion, 'Filipinized' the concept and innovated it. So they were like the Village People, In Biker Form. As I grew up they held and sang the theme song for Palibhasa Lalaki a show that ran for 5 years. Ladies and gentlemen, the HAGIBIS. Legends of Philippine POP and Rock Culture.

Chi was honored to create a new Vinyl album cover in ode to them for Manila Design Week Sound Visions held at THE store at Cubao X a few months back.

One of our favorite and most secretive artists is the man by the name of Banksy. We posted his Sun newspaper official interview a month or so ago. Now, the world is slowly becoming conscious of his daring and provocative work -- even Matt Groening and his crew of the legendary Simpsons cartoon.

Hit the jump for a Simpsons opening credit sequence directed and storyboarded by the graff artist himself. Be warned, it is dark, sadistic and nothing like the yellow characters have ever seen before. Not even the Halloween episodes have anything on this.

Point is, I represent a group of individuals, creatives and dreamers who represent a belief and a lifestyle that not a lot may have experienced.

Now a look into the future says, that we want to see something different. We're stocking wooden frames again but with a lower price point. Maibashi wood frames. the same aesthetic and alternative intelligent style , for a more affordable price..

Black Book Design: Escora x Chi "Finer Things"

In Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray, we take a journey into the deterioration of one man's body and soul through the blissful sins we all indulge in, sometimes even consider "treats"- alcohol, beauty, wealth, hate, anger, sex, drugs, fame. Mr. Gray was a damned rock star of the 1800's. An artist that was deeply in love with him created a masterpiece portrait of Dorian at the height of his true beauty, physical and spiritual, before he threw himself to be a slave of temptation. Obsessed with his physical beauty, he wondered if he could stay beautiful forever, if there was anything he could trade to never age beyond that moment. As he contemplated this before the finished painting, who knows what truly happens, but after some questionable behavior, Dorian returns to the painting to find it blemished.. but not accidentally.

Long story short, the masterpiece becomes a mirror to his soul, which slowly, day after day, is being mauled by Dorian's pleasure-seeking lifestyle and depicting him as the hideous monster he truly is.

What's the moral of the story?

"In life, there are simple things that we as human beings overlook... Being aware of the thought of being too addicted and indulging too much on the FINER THINGS will make you take a second look at the simple items in life and how a cluster of simplicity and create complexity."
